2020-01-09

If you’re looking for an on-time flight at a major airport, you can’t do better in the Istanbul than Malaysia-Owned Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (ISGIA) in Turkey.

Malaysia Airports’ involvement in ISGIA started in 2008 when together with its consortium partners, it was awarded the concession to operate the airport for 20 + 4 years. By 2014, the airport operator had acquired 100% stake in ISGIA, making it one of the world’s largest airport operator group in terms of passenger numbers. ISGIA is the second largest airport in Turkey and is the world’s busiest single runway and terminal.

The OAG (Air Travel Intelligence) categorizes “major” airports as those with 20-30 million departing scheduled seats per year.

The Top 20 airports in the Major Airport category on average ensured that 78.6% of arriving and departing flights operated within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival and departure times in 2019. The average data coverage for these airports was 96.3%.

Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen takes first place this year with OTP (on-time performance) of 83%.

Minneapolis/St Paul moves up to second place in the Punctuality League for airports, from its third place ranking last year.

Moscow Sheremetyevo, which was in first place last year, doesn’t appear here because it has moved in to the next size category of Mega Airports.

Detroit takes third place. The top three are very close in position, all with less than half a percentage point between them. Half of the Top 20 Major Airports are located in the USA.

Doha, which managed second place last year, has seen OTP decline by five percentage points and now comes in at eighth place.
